The medical cannabis pilot programme was initiated in November 2016, a nearly unanimous parliament in Denmark decided that it was a good idea to establish a four-year trial of medical cannabis. On 15 December 2017 the law was adopted and the pilot programme started on 1 January 2018.
The medical cannabis pilot programme's purpose is to give patients a legal opportunity to test treatment with medical cannabis if they have not benefited from approved medicine.
The medical cannabis pilot programme must provide a better basis for assessing the use of medical cannabis at the end of the trial period.
The medical cannabis pilot programme consists of a strict application process, due to this, it is unlikely that existing local agricultural companies will enter the new marketplace, as only cannabis-specific facilities can be considered for consideration.
